For Daniel and Esperanza Arellano, the decision to adopt a child — or two — rests somewhere at the crossroads of faith and family.

The Española couple, who are in their mid-30s, have three biological children — Uriah, Elias and Malachi — and just adopted two younger siblings, Jeielle and Jehu, this autumn. The family also has taken in 21-year-old Angelica Seña and her daughter, Kylie.

“We just always wanted to do it,” Esperanza said this past Sunday morning, shortly before worship services began at Española’s The Rock Christian Fellowship, where Daniel works as a minister alongside her father, Michael Naranjo, the founder of the church.

“For us, family goes beyond blood,” Daniel explained. “We’ve allowed these children to become our flesh and blood. With our help, they can rewrite their stories.”
